Landlord and Airforce Vet Facing Homelessness as Moratorium Barred Evictions

By Rebecca McLean on October 4, 2021 News

News stories continue to pop up of small business men & women, property owners and managers, who have been economically harmed (and in many cases ruined) by the CDC’s unconstitutional eviction moratorium.  In one not-so-rare case, an Air Force veteran in New York State is now living out of her car after the eviction moratorium prevented her from evicting tenants who withheld over $23k in rent for over the past year.  In addition, although some sources reported that the landlord and her tenants qualify for federal rental assistance, the challenge is that the U.S. Treasury has only distributed 10% of the allotted funds.  To compound the problem of the $2.6 billion in rental assistance given to New York, only 8% has been distributed.

“I don’t understand how they can give my private property to somebody to live for free. I bought that property. I fixed it up with my blood, sweat, and tears,” she added.
